This summer's heat and drought has most lawns in the area looking pretty worn out. Now is a great time to start the renovation process so your lawn looks better next spring. Here are a few things you should do yet this fall.
Overseed: The prime window for overseeding is September 15th to October 15th. The reason for this is that air tempatures are cooling off while soil temps remain warm. These are idea conditions for seed germenation. For the most part, we recommend Turf Type Tall Fescue for this area. When overseeding use five pounds to a thousand square feet. Using a slice seeder will create the best seed to soil contact and, in turn, provide the best results.
Fertilize: Fall is the most important time to fertilize your lawn. Building strength in the roots and blades will prepare it for a long winter. You may still make a couple applications yet this fall, or use Greenview's Fairway Formula long lasting fertilizer. It lasts at least a month longer than all other brands, saving you time and money.
Aeration: A common misconception is that aeration and seeding go hand in hand. In reality you get better results from your seed if you put it down without aerating. Likewise, you'll get better results from aerating if you do it after the prime seeding window has closed. Aeration losens the soil and waiting until November will allow the ground's natural freezing and thawing process to enhance the effects.
